Andree Wallin

I emailed several illustrators and digital artists asking for some answers to some short questions, and I got one reply back today from a Swedish matte painter/concept artist working in the UK. It's too late to put into reports and research files now probably but this still counts towards our research files.

Andree Wallin's website is at http://www.andreewallin.com/
He's a very skilled digital painter!

Hi Jennifer,

I've been buried under work recently and that's why I could only give you a few short answers, but I hope they'll be somewhat useful for your project.

Good luck and thanks for watching!

Kind regards,
Andree

Hello Andree,

My name is Jennifer Cant and I am a 2nd year student on an FDA Visual Communication course at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth in the UK.
I am currently working on a unit called Work Related Learning, part of this involves contacting professionals within the creative industry to gain a wider understanding of the design and illustrative world. My findings will be gathered into a research file and a worded report.

I was hoping it would be alright if I could email you some questions about your practice as a concept artist and a freelance illustrator?
If you could possibly answer these for me it would very appreciated! Any information you could give, no matter how brief would be extremely helpful.

If however you are too busy I understand and wish you well. I am an avid follower of your work and have been for a few years.

Please find the questions below.

How did you first enter the creative world and what made you choose to specialise in conceptual/character art, matte painting and illustration?

I've always enjoyed drawing as a kid and I discovered digital painting at the age of 19 I think. When I was 24 I applied for a 3D study in Stockholm and got in, where I met Levente Peterffy who noticed that I was painting a lot. After a few months he asked me if I wanted him to introduce me to a company (Realtime) that he knew were looking for new concept artists / mattepainters, and that's how I got my job there.

How long have you worked for your company (RealtimeUK)?

I've worked here since June 2008.l

Do you do any freelance work? If so, how do you promote your work or do you find that clients will find you?

I do freelance work on occasion, and I always get contacted by the clients themselves. I update my portfolio often and I'm active on the forums which gives you good exposure to potential clients.

What type of work do you mainly create both in employment and as a freelancer?

Concept environments and scene visualizations. Mattepainting as well but not as much as the first two.

Do you prefer freelance work as opposed to full time employment or vice versa?

Definetely full time. I easily get stressed out when I have to work both at the office and then when I get home in the evening.

How has the Internet impacted getting clients internationally?

Well, without internet I wouldn't be working with this at all. It is an indispensable tool in my business.

Do you find that your practice as a freelancer has been impacted by the recent economic downturn? Would this apply to full time work as well?

Well, I'm fairly new in the industry, still haven't completed my first year. But I do think that employers are a lot more careful at the moment, and I know we're suffering from the recession as well.

What advice would you give to a graduate looking to find work in concept art or illustration?

Practice a lot and make sure to post your work on forums, ask for critique and try to listen to what people have to say. As long as you want to learn and show some progression people are going to notice you sooner or later.

Thank you very much for your time.
Best wishes
Jennifer Cant
